Why is it called Velcro?

The word "Velcro" originated from French. "VELours" (velvet) - represents the soft side. 

"CROchet" (hook) - represents the hooked side. It is not the name of the product but the name

 of a company. It consists of two sides, one with hooks and the other with loops. To use it, simply stick the two sides together.
